Historical Significance

The Fraser Gathering Red Ancient Tartan, designed in 1997 by Polly Wittering of the Macnaughton Group and Lady Saltoun, was created for the Castle Fraser Gathering in Aberdeenshire. The Fraser clan, with roots in both the Lowlands and Highlands, has a rich history spanning across Scotland. Originating from Anjou, France, they adopted their name from places like Fredarius, Fresel, or Freseau. The strawberry plant in their coat of arms is a heraldic pun, symbolizing their connection to ancestral lands. They stood by figures like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, with Simon Fraser of Lovat saving Bruce's life three times. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, they supported the Royalists, showing their loyalty to the crown. Despite defeat at the Battle of Worcester, the clan's resilience endured, and their legacy lives on through their tartan.
